Founded in 1877, Alto (previously known as "Lulah City" and "Long View") was incorporated on December 16, 1895. The community straddles Habersham and Banks counties. One square mile in size and 1,395 feet above sea level, it has a population of approximately 1,820 people.
The community name derives from Italian term for "high," for its elevation.
Water Service
The Town of Alto offers water service, but sewer service is not available at this time. Residents applying for water service may do so at Town Hall by filling out a New Resident form. Applicants will need to know their 911 (street) and mailing addresses. The fees to start service are as follows: Connect fee: $25; Deposit: $75. Fees are subject to change without notice.
Due to the increase in the number of requests for water service, a 24-hour waiting period is in effect. For more information, please contact Town Hall.
Building Permits
The Town of Alto issues building permits after a minimum of 300 square feet is reached. The cost is 6 cents per square foot heated and 5 cents per square foot unheated, subject to change. For more information about when a permit must be obtained and what is required to receive one, please contact Town Hall. To build, remodel, grade, etc outside city limits, please contact the Habersham County Building Department.
Yard Sale Guidelines
Thinking of hosting a yard sale in the Town of Alto? The simple requirements to do so are listed below:
- On or before the date of the sale, apply for a permit and pay a $10 retainer
- Display the permit during the event
- Be careful not to cause traffic or other hazards, and place signs only where permitted by law
- Sell for no more than two consecutive days (unless another permit is acquired -- see below)
- Clean up within two days afterwards
- Pick up retainer at Town Hall within seven days of the sale
For each two additional days, another permit should be obtained and another retainer fee paid. There is, however, no limit to the number of yard sales residents may have per year.
