FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REAL/PERSONAL PROPERTY:

I received a notice in May/June and then I received another notice in August.  The amounts are different.  Why?

  • The notice mailed in May/June was from the Tax Assessors Office with an estimation of the tax liability for the current year using the same millage rates as the prior year.  The millage rates are not set until after the County Commissioners, School Board and Cities finalize their budgets and hold meetings to set the millage rates.

  • The statement mailed in August was the actual tax bill for the current year which has the millage rate after the municipalities set the rates.  The amounts would change due to this reason.  But, it is normally not a large amount.

Am I receiving the homestead exemption?

  • On the right side and mid-page of the tax statement, there is a section that says exemptions.  If  an S1 is indicated, that’s a standard homestead.  There are other exemptions i.e. L1, L2, L3 and S5.  If you are still not sure you are receiving the exemption you should be getting, call the Tax Assessors Office (706) 754-2557.

Can I pay my property taxes on-line.

  • Yes.  The site to pay taxes on-line is www.habershamga.com.  Look under on-line services, pay taxes, pay on-line, enter ONE of the variables and follow the prompts.  Do not attempt to fill-in all the blanks on the search page.  Only one is necessary.  For example, last name.  Due date is November 15th.

  • Go to the closest Department of Public Safety Office or

I paid $2000 for my 2014 Lexus.  Will that be the value used when calculating the TAVT?

  • No.  The value is downloaded into the system by Department of Revenue.  The values are set in accordance with the NADA Value Guide.  When the vin# is entered by the county processor, the value is automatically populated, and TAVT is based on that value.  Not the purchase price.

I need a tag for a vehicle I purchased from an individual and the title is available.  How do I purchase a tag?  While that sounds like an easy question, there are many variables.

NOTE:   Some states do require a notary on the title.  Check the back of the title and have this executed/sealed at the time the seller signs the title.  THERE CAN BE NO MARK OUTS, MARK THROUGH OR WHITE OUT ON THE TITLE.  If this happens, other documents will be required.  If the documents do not appear authentic, the tax office can require verification.
