State Probation OfficeThe State Probation office, as part of the Mountain Judicial District, has offices in three counties: Habersham, Stephens, and Rabun. In Habersham County it supervises adult felony and concurrently running misdemeanor probationers; stand-alone misdemeanor probation cases are handled by a private company at the time of this writing (June 2002) Why is supervision so important?A "felony" is a major crime punishable by death or imprisonment in a penitentiary. "Probation" is the suspension of all or part of a convicted person's sentence, as long as his/her behavior is satisfactory. Supervision of adult felony probationers helps ensure compliance with acceptable conduct and is, therefore, the basic function of the State Probation Office. What duties does that involve? Regular contact with many probationers, based on the level of supervision needed (maximum, high, or standard), is maintained. Drug and alcohol tests, record checks, and DFCS (also called DFACS--Department of Family and Children Services) investigations are also conducted when necessary. Other cases are handled on unsupervised status and in "tolled warrant" (outstanding warrant for arrest for a probationer who can not be found at present) status.
