City of DemorestFounded on November 13, 1889 as a "model town" (no alcohol allowed), Demorest is about 1,345 feet above sea level and has approximately 1,088 residents. Despite the passing of years and the changes that occurred, Demorest still thrives. Its location on Highway 441 between Cornelia and Clarkesville, its natural beauty, Demorest Springs Park, and the four-year accredited Piedmont College are among the factors that have contributed to its economic health and growth. Piedmont College and Demorest Springs Park are probably the first landmarks that visitors notice in this one-square-mile city, which is the birthplace of the late Johnny Mize, a baseball great who became the only player in Major League history to hit 50 or more home runs in a season while striking out less than 50 times.
