Reclaiming Pet from ShelterSometimes when a pet wanders, it may be picked up and taken to the Animal Shelter. If possible, Shelter employees contact the owner so that the animal may be returned. But if the dog or cat does not have an identification tag on it, how can it be reclaimed by its anxious family? The owner should check with the Shelter within five days after the pet has gone missing. Why within five days? Because that is the length of time that most animals are held before they become available for adoption. After the holding time is up, the dog or cat may be adopted, and the original family may never see it again. (If the animal is not there at that time, periodically check back.) Before a pet can be released, a boarding fee of $5 per day will need to be paid. Also, if the owner lives within one of the cities that require registration of dogs and cats, proof of compliance with the city's ordinance must also be presented before the owner may take the pet home. |
